The Vet was host to the Cardinals and Phillies as the two NL East clubs split a four game series. The Cardinals won in two blowouts, while the Phillies won both of the close-played games.
Game 1: Cardinals 9, Phillies 2. The Cardinals had four triples among their 11 hits as Bob Forsch bested Larry Christensen in baseball's return to competitive play.
Game 2: Phillies 4, Cardinals 1. Former Cardinal Steve Carlton continued to be a nemesis as he held the Redbirds to six hits and 1 earned run, striking out 9 in 6 innings to get the win over Lary Sorensen.
Game 3: Cardinals 10, Phillies 4. Cardinals get two more triples and Darrell Porter drives in four runs as the Cards roll to their second victory. Lefty John Martin got the win over Nino Espinosa, with veteran Jim Kaat going the final three for St. Louis.
Game 4: Phillies 3, Cardinals 2. The Cardinals actually outhit the Phillies 7 to 5 in this one, and hit the only two homers in the game, yet they came up on the short end of the score. The Phillies scored in the second on a double by Lonnie Smith and single by Manny Trillo. With two out and none on in Phillie third and the Redbirds up 2-1 on solo homers by Keith Hernandez and Darrel Porter, starter Silvio Martinez walked the bases full, then surrendered a two-run single to Lonnie Smith. Cardinal manager Bike Mike was thinking that Smith might look good in a Cardinal uniform. Dickie Noles went five innings for the Phillies, and the bullpen pitched the final four innings scoreless to preserve the win for Noles. --submitted by BikeMike Roberts--
