Expos and Bucs split rare home and home series

Aug 10, 1981 - Olympic Stadium
Jim Bibby vs Steve Rogers
Expos 3, Pirates 2
With one out in the 9th speedy Omar Moreno sliced a double to left center to break up veteran Steve Rogers' no hit bid.  Two batter later Mike Easler singled home Moreno to erase the shutout.  One batter later Jason Thompson singled home Bill Madlock and now it was a 1 run ball game.  Bill "the Spaceman" Lee was summoned from the pen to give the Expos the coveted lefty vs lefty match up against Dave Parker.  The Cobra hit a shallow fly to center for the second out.  Newly acquired Jeff Reardon was up next and he was able to get rookie backstop Tony Pena to fly out to left to end the game.  Rogers got his win, but just like Ringo Starr, he got by with a little help from his friends.  Rodney Scott, Warren Cromartie and Gary Carter all knocked in solo runs for the Expos, who as a team were fanned 5 times by Jim Bibby.

Rick Rhoden vs Bill Gullickson
Pirates 8, Expos 7
A five run outburst in the top of the second occurred thanks to a 2 out error by Larry Parrish at third.  4 of Pittsburgh's 5 runs were unearned, because they came after Parrish's faux pas.  Jerry White and Chris Speier's RBI singles cut the lead to 5-2.  Andre Dawson's RBI single in the 3rd made it 5-3.  Parrish was able to slightly redeem himself with an RBI single in the 5th to make it a 5-4 game.  A two run homer in the bottom of the 7th by "the Hawk", Andre Dawson put the Expos out in front 6-5.  That lead would be short lived a "the Cobra", Dave Parker hit a roundtripper of his own to reinstate the Pirates 1 run lead.  Montreal wasn't through battling just yet.  After Lee Lacy booted a simple grounder to second by Tim Raines, pinch hitter Tim Wallach singled the fleet footed rookie home to tie the game at 7-7.  Montreal's abilty to battle back from adversity was once again squandered as Gary Carter made a throwing error on a drag bunt attempt by Omar Moreno, who stole second and scored on Phil Garner's pinch hit single off of Woodie Fryman.  Kent Tekulve would pitch a scoreless 9th for the save.  Rod Scurry, who blew the save, got the undeserved win.

Aug 12, 1981 - Three Rivers Stadium
Scott Sanderson vs Eddie Solomon
Expos 6, Pirates 0
A rare sequential home and home series saw both teams fly from Montreal to Pittsburgh to continue their series.  Today's story was simple Scott Sanderson, who scattered 7 hits en route to a 6-0 easy shutout of the Bucs.  until the top of the 5th Sanderson was closely protecting a 1-0 lead thanks to a solo blast by Dawson in the 2nd.  Tim Raines one out homer in the 9th was followed by a two run shot by Dawson to make it 4-0.  Kid Carter's 2 run blast in the 7th rounded out the score at 6-0 as Sanderson never was threatened.

Ray Burris vs Luis Tiant
Pirates 3, Expos 2
El Tiante' left his Colonial All Beef Franks in "Jan-kee" Stadium and found his old time magic here in Pittsburgh once again.  Luis Tiant was simply Brilliant for 7 2/3 innings before the Expos finally got on the scoreboard and made it a 1 run game.  A pinch hit RBI triple by Terry Francona made it 3-1 and a RBI ground out by Mike Phillips made it 3-2.  Montreal would threaten again in the 9th with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out before submariner Kent Tekulve fanned Larry Parrish for the final out of the game.  Dave Parker continued his hot hitting with a 3 for 4 day with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.  Moreno was once again the offensive catalyst going 2 for 4 with an RBI.  Those two (Moreno and Parker) accounted for 5 of Pittsburgh's 7 hits.  Montreal only had 4 hits on the day, with just 2 being charged to Tiant.
