The St. Louis Cardinals visited Montreal expecting to play three games against the upstart 'Spos. Instead, the clubs got only one in as Olympic Stadium officials decided the venue was not fit to play the remaining 2 games. "With the sudden return of baseball, the facilities need some more work in order to accomodate the crowds" an Olympic Stadium offical proclaimed. Only two restrooms were available for the game, and one full concession stand, along with a few hot dog kiosks. "Our fans deserve a major league venue, and we will give them one" the stadium spokeman went on to say. The two cancelled games are tentatively scheduled to be made up in September, presumably with a full compliment of Olympic Stadium fan accomodations.
While patrons were waiting in long lines, the teams on the field battled to a 2-2 tie for four innings. Charlie Lea started for the home club, while lefty Bob Shirley was on the hill for St. Louis. The Expos tallied the first two runs on a two-out run scoring double by Chris Speier in the second, and a Tim Wallach single in the third that scored Rodney Scott, who had also singled and stolen second.
The Cardinals tied it in the fourth when Keith Hernandez walked to start the inning, moved to third an out later on a double by Dane Iorg, then scored along with Iorg on Sixto Lezcano's single. The Cardinals doubled their tally count in the fifth when Lea lost command, and walked in two runs with the bases loaded.
The Expos came back with a run of their own in the bottom half when Tim Raines reached second on an errant throw by Ken Oberkfell, stole third, then came home on Wallach's grounder to second. That was as close as the Expos would get.
The Cardinals put a total of 8 runs on the board in the seventh and eighth innings, with homers by Silent George Hendrick in the seventh and Lezcano in the eighth being the big blows. Lezcano finished the day with 5 RBI. --submitted by BikeMike--
