The Bums sweep their perennial foes in 3 games, two games are shutouts.
Game 1: Reds 0, Dodgers 1 - Dodger Stadium
Fernando mania grows as the lefty K's 9, walks none, faces only 4 above the minimum in a 3 hit shutout versus Mario Soto. 97 strikes versus 27 balls. Tough nailbiter of a game, as Soto put up great numbers, too. He allowed only 5 hits, while walking none, and struck out 8.
MVP: Fernando Valenzuela
Game 2: Reds 1, Dodgers 2:
Burt Hooton pitches a good game, going 8 strong innings, giving up one unearned run, before being pulled for 2 relief pitchers who worked into the 11th for the win.
MVP: Burt Hooton
Game 3: Reds 3, Dodgers 9:
The fireworks started in the bottom of the first, and continued, more or less, all through the game as The Dodgers lit up Cincinnati pitching, starting with Pastore L(0-2) who lasted 4 innings before being replaced for the next 4 by Moskau. Bob Welch W(1-0) goes 8 innings, getting the win. Niedenfuer pitches the 9th, facing 3 batters to finish the game. Mike Scioscia slams 2 homers, showing some power from the left side of the plate. Darrell Thomas swipes his 4th base of the year, while Cey (LA) and Collins (CIN) both hit their first 4 baggers of the season.
MVP: Mike Scioscia
I'm not used to having a team with awesome pitching. This one sure as hell has it. Fernando is the monster I remember as a kid. ;)
