10/8/1981 - GAME 1 - Busch Memorial Stadium
Carlton (5-2) vs Forsch (4-5
Phillies 4, Cardinals 0
Nothing gives a manager more confidence than handing the ball to Steve Carlton to start off a playoff series. Manager Justin Ryan gave "Lefty" the ball and the silent man who avoids the press rewarded his manager with a 3 hit complete game shutout. Carlton fanned 6, while walking just 2. The Phighin's wasted no time in scoring as NL batting champ Lonnie Smith and shortstop Larry Bowa led off with back to back singles. Bowa stole second and veteran Pete Rose lined and opposite field single to score both runners and make it 2-0. A 2 run homer by catcher Keith Moreland in the 4th would round out the scoring as Carlton brought his "A-game" today.
Phillies lead series 1-0
10/9 - GAME 2
Noles vs Sorensen
Cardinals 7, Phillies 6 (10 inn)
After spotting Philadelphia 3 runs over the first 3 innings the Cards rallied for 3 in the bottom of the 3rd to tie it. Garry Templeton's RBI single in the 4th gave St. Louis their first lead in the series, which was short lived thanks to Mike Schmidt's 2 run shot in the top of the 5th. The Cards managed to scratch out a run on a DP in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up at 5-5. Schmidt's 2nd home of the game came in the top of the 9th off of reliever Doug Bair and looked to be the end of the Cardinals hopes. Ron Reed was tasked with closing out the game in the bottom of the 9th, but he served up a 1 out gopher ball to "Silent" George Hendrick, which knotted the game up at 6-6. Extra innings were needed to solve the deadlock. Philly did not score against Bruce Sutter in the top of the 10th. Ron Reed started the bottom of the inning and was greeted by Tito Landrum with a triple that rolled to the wall in the right center gap. Reed issued intentional passes to Templeton and Mike Ramsey in hopes of getting a force at every base. Unfortunately for Reed the only force he would see was a forced run scored by Landrum when Keith Hernandez worked out a game winning walk.
Series tied 1-1
10/11 - GAME 3 - Veterans Stadium
Martinez vs Ruthven
Phillies 6, Cardinals 2
3 runs in the bottom of the third and 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th equaled victory for the Phightin's. Cardinal starter Silvio Martinez had nothing and was responsible for all 6 runs scored in 6 innings of work. Dick Ruthven gave up just 1 run in 7 innings and fanned 4 without walking a batter. Lonnie Smith was 3 for 4. Pinch hitter Dick Davis was super clutch with a pinch hit 3 run shout that salted away the game.
Phillies lead series 2-1
10/12 - GAME 4
Andujar vs Christenson
Phillies 8, Cardinals 3
After scoring 8 runs over the first 2 innings the Phils cruised to victory over the lifeless Cardinals. Gary "Sarge" Matthews had a 4 RBI day after going 2 for 3. He also scored a run. Lonnie Smith had 2 more hits as did starter Larry Christenson. Dick Davis had another pinch hit. Tug McGraw and Ron Reed got some mop up work as the game was never in doubt.
